Takes applications for retirement, disability, and survivors benefits, for workers and their families, and administers the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Also issues Social Security numbers. Eligibility for social security:  Retiree age 65+, or younger disabled, with qualifying quarters worked.

SSI for those with limited income and assets. Contact Social Security to learn how much money you can earn without lowering your Social Security payment. Call office or apply online.

Homeowner & Renter Assistance Program

Once-a-year payment from the State to qualified filers. (Not to be confused with the Nonrefundable Renters' Credit available on standard California taxes due 4/15.)

Eligibility:  Age 62+, blind, or disabled; own or rent a qualified California residence during specified year; and meet household income limitations. Filing period July 1 – Oct. 16, although it may be possible to file after that period. Call toll-free HRA line or visit website for info., forms, and location of volunteer assistance in filing.
